In blistering 35°C heat, today, numerous stakeholders in collaboration with uMkhanyakude District Municipality embarked on hiking trail, where news of the plans in the pipeline to turn Ghosts Mountain heritage into sustainable jobs, were announced.
The announcement was made during a strategic activation at the iconic Sleeping Woman of Tshaneni, led by Economic and Tourism Portfolio Committee Chairperson Cllr Tim Moodley, on behalf of His Worship the Mayor Cllr Siphile Mdaka, together with Izinduna, Amafa CEO Mr Mxolisi Dlamuka and government officials under the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture led by MEC Mntomuhle Khawula.
Plans in the pipeline include:
- Packaging Ghosts Mountain, famed for resembling an African woman lying on her back, as a flagship for heritage, spiritual and film tourism
- Creating a tourism corridor linking Jozini Dam, Ghosts Mountain and Vumazulu Cultural Village
- Developing hiking trails and a lodge at the site
- Leveraging partnerships, attracting investment and job creation.
Timed ahead of uMkhosi WoMhlanga, this initiative has huge potential of changing heritage to jobs through responsible commercialization for inclusive growth.
