Thousands to benefit from uMkhanyakude groundwater project

By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Water-scarce communities in the uMkhanyakude District Municipality are receiving some much-needed support.
A groundwater purification project is being introduced to the area on Tuesday.
The SANDF, which's leading the programme, will help the municipality disperse clean water to rural communities.
About 150 000 litres of purified water will be drawn from the Mkuze River every day before being distributed by water tanks.
Department of Cooperative Governance spokesperson, Senzelwe Mzila says more than 45 000 homes, schools and businesses will benefit from the project.
"The department is able to assist municipalities to get water more frequently as water tankers no longer have to travel long distances to fetch purified water," says Mzila.
