The Big 5 False Bay Municipality came into being in year 2000.TheMunicipality is surrounded by world-renowned game and nature reserves such as St Lucia, Hluhluwe/UMfolozi and Mkuze andis strategically located along the Lubombo Spatial Development Initiative which is important for driving the local economy. Hluhluwe is considered the hub of tourism in KwaZulu-Natal. The big Five-lion, rhino, elephant, this municipal area is 100 % rural and consists of four traditional areas. Hlabisa is located in one of the world’s richest and diverse tourism areas. This municipality has a major draw card in the tourism industry which is the Hluhluwe- UMfolozi Game Reserve, located 280 km north of Durban. It is also the oldest proclaimed park in Africa where all the big five game occur. In terms of Tourism, the municipality is aiming within the next five years to capture a greater share of the African buffalo and leopards are all to be seen at the park. So the vision for this municipality is to improve the quality of life of local communities through service delivery, providing the local community with equal access to tourist facilities as well as opportunities to operate them.
