Speaker of uMkhanyakude District Municipality-Hlengiwe S’lindile Mavimbela

I am proud to be part of uMkhanyakude District Municipality and I hope to engage with various municipal structures women councillors, women biased to traditional leadership, women with roles in the communities, and women in infrastructure projects, in the aim to pool our resources in order to address the concerns and needs of women as part of contributing towards a progressive future for women and eradicating poverty.

Last year, to commemorate 56 years of women struggle against apartheid, discrimination, poverty, inequality and unemployment, UMkhanyakude District Municipality hosted its first ever Women Summit, which tackled issues on domestic violence, women empowerment, teenage pregnancy, drugs and substance abuse.

We at uMkhanyakude are also looking at a plan forward in how to address poverty, unemployment and inequality. We also want to serve as a means of engaging with communities and encouraging them to partner with government and actively speak out against women and child abuse as well as fight all forms of violence against women and children. All communities can play an active role in helping the municipality to eradicate violence against women by reporting those crimes to the police. Help uMkhanyakude improve the livelihoods of the poor, vulnerable groups and support initiatives to reduce vulnerability of infectious diseases.

I want to assist women to realize their true character and motive, especially the girl child to realise their full potential. With the little resources we have we can achieve more together, so we must unite as the people of uMkhanyakude.
